Theology and Vocation for Performing Artists

The following is an event coming up in NYC this summer. IAM's Christy Tennant will be a guest lecturer.

Fuller Theological Seminary and the Brehm Center present the following course offering:

Theology and Vocation for Performing Artists

July 12-15, 2010 in NYC

Course Description: Christian artists working in theatre, dance, film, television and music face challenges unique to the cultures they inhabit and the work they do. The performative act places a focus on self that easily slips into solipsism. Economic and moral demands are often in conflict with Christian ethics. The artists may face antagonism or isolation. On the other hand, the opportunities for faithful Christian walk and culture making are plentiful. In this course we will read about and discuss ways Christian performing artists can discover their calling and apply theological truths to their artistry, and we will meet NYC based performing artists who are doing just that.

Cost Breakdown for participation in the course:

$400 Program Fee – this would cover costs related to running the course as well as a participant’s registration for the symposium, and a ticket to one matinee performance

$300 Auditing Fee with documentation provide by the Brehm Center for the auditor

For those attending the symposium who desire CEU credits from the Brehm Center:

$100 fee – they can receive up to 2 units for full participation in the symposium as well as documentation from the Brehm Center

ArtPrize announces six Exhibition Centers, opens venue registration to kick off 2010 event
If you were part of ArtPrize 2009, you'll remember a sense of urgency to rush through planning as part of "the experiment." However, we don't feel it has to stay that way.

This year, we start registration earlier--and change how we do it--to allow more room for planning and site specific work.

 Exhibition Centers

More people, see more art, in more neighborhoods. That's the mantra behind "exhibition centers," what we call a handful of large venues curated by regional cultural institutions.
In 2009, The Old Federal building quickly became a starting point for people to venture out into ArtPrize. In reflection, it was a large venue (over 30 artists), professionally curated and housing a voter registration site and ArtPrize store. People felt confident that it was a good place to start.

In 2010, we want people exploring the city more, so we're creating exhibition centers as different launching points into the event. Each one is a non-profit facility with a sponsor attached, curated by a regional cultural institution, and housing over 25 artists, a voter registration site and a store.

They are...
Grand Rapids Art Museum
Urban Institute of Contemporary Arts
Diocese of Grand Rapids' Cathedral Square
Grand Rapids Public Museum
Women's City Club
Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park

How We Changed Registration

With one year under your belt, many of you are planning what you'll do in 2010. Last year, the way he had artists and venues register and match all at the same time made planning difficult.

This year, venues register first, so artists identify certain spaces to help shape their ideas. During May, venues watch artists become available and make plans for their own shows. Since artists cannot officially secure a venue until the matching period--after registration ends--venues know all available artists before any are secured for the event.

By June, hopefully artists and venues are already making plans and having conversations. There is one month to finalize arrangements, sign hosting agreements and secure artists.

"What's startling is that Toby Twining's music - a significant component of the production's success - is a synthesis of elements unlike anything heard outside cutting-edge downtown Manhattan art circles. Maybe not even there."

BFA: Basic Finance for Artists

Basic Finance for Artists (BFA) is a six-week intensive seminar on money management and personal finance for artists.

Designed especially for artists, Basic Finance for Artists is a free, concentrated, six-week series of workshops that will help develop financial awareness and balance through practical training in money management. The program takes into consideration the complexity of artists’ income flow and diversity of artistic practices. Workshops provide a combination of seminar-style learning and hands-on group and individual exercises. Experts in the field and guest artists will help lead the workshops and address issues that are relevant to artist-specific needs.

Artists who participate in this series of workshops will gain a better understanding of their financial profiles, specific goals, and contacts with business and arts professionals. Participants will also receive a resource guide that will provide exercises, reference materials, and useful tips to continue to develop their skills. Artists in this program should set aside up to two hours each week for homework and workshop preparation.
Deadline for registration is 11PM on March 22, 2010.

The workshop series is free, but space is limited. Registration is required.

Due to high demand, participants will be selected through a lottery process. All completed registrations will be included in the lottery, and all selected participants will be notified by April 1, 2010.
