Call for Submissions: Urban Culture Project
Urban Culture Project and independent curator Amy Kligman are soliciting work for an upcoming exhibition. This show will include book related work, ranging widely in format and purpose. The hope is to present to the community the book as an opportunity - the book as entry point to one's own art practice, as catalyst to new and evolved work, and as an unpredictable format that can be taken far beyond the bound signatures with which we are most familiar.Artists should submit work that exemplifies best the following categories: Books inspiring new media projects (projection, film, digital); Wall pieces that are inspired by the book format or convey the impression of "pages"; Sketchbooks or process books; Artist books (small run limited edition or original books, not mass produced); Books demonstrating the Zine or Magazine format; Altered books and/or books as sculptural objects; or Work demonstrating collaboration between artists and writers, poets, journalists, or academics.
The exhibition will run November 19, 2010 through early January, 2011 at the Paragraph Gallery / 23 East 12th Street, KCMO 64105.

14th Annual No Dead Artists Juried Exhibition
14th Annual No Dead Artists Juried Exhibition
The exhibition was created in 1995 to give a voice to emerging artists. Now in its 14th year, No Dead Artists has become an exhibition that has time and again discovered new and emerging talent. Jury winner’s work will be on exhibit at the JONATHAN FERRARA Gallery, 400a Julia Street, in the New Orleans Arts District and selected jury winners will appear in a feature article on ArtDaily.org in early September. In the article, art critic D. Eric Bookhardt, (Art Papers and Gambit) will review the exhibition and select images for publication.
This annual event is designed to give a real pulse on the creative scene happening in contemporary art today. This year is the first year the exhibition’s call to artists is national. NO DEAD ARTISTS is open to living artists working in the United States. All mediums are accepted including, but not limited to, painting, sculpture, glass, metal-work, photography, video, mixed media and installation art. In its 14th year, No Dead Artists has one of the most celebrated art exhibitions in the South. The exhibition takes place in New Orleans, which has become a hotspot for contemporary visual art that is frequented by national collectors, critics and curators alike.
Each year hundreds of artists apply and thousands attend the annual event. Several artists’ careers have taken off after being selected for NO DEAD ARTISTS and have led to gallery representation, museum acquisitions, national reviews and inclusion in biennials such as Prospect New Orleans.
This year’s expansion to a national level is marked by a partnership with ArtDaily.org, the first art newspaper on the Internet. ArtDaily publishes a daily newsletter that is sent to over 60,000 readers worldwide and their website receives over 600,000 visitors per month which is tremendous exposure.
Each year, a jury of prestigious art world insiders lends their eyes to select the works for the show. It is an honor to announce the jurors this year who are also all trustees of The Whitney Museum of American Art.

Archbishop of Canterbury Endorses Chasing Francis: A Pilgrim's Tale
Colorado Springs, CO (June 28, 2010)—More than 800 years ago St. Francis of Assisi single-handedly altered the spiritual and political climate of his time. Today, Chasing Francis, a captivating book that examines the lessons the saint can teach contemporary Christians, has received an endorsement from the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams.
“I’ve now read it twice and found it equally compelling both times. It’s a challenging and disarming and delightful book, and the vision behind it is a serious one. It’s a remarkable book,” says Dr. Williams.
This significant endorsement has sparked a renewed interest in Chasing Francis, which is a creative and compelling hybrid of fiction, theology, and historical biography. The first book by Ian Morgan Cron, Chasing Francis masterfully weaves actual accounts of St. Francis' radical impact on the world into the fictional story of a New England minister on a pilgrimage to regain his faith.
Listen to Archbishop of Canterbury Dr. Rowan Williams’ address at the “Fresh Expression: Changing the Landscape” conference in which he summarizes the plot of Chasing Francis; discusses the five principles the book emphasizes for the church: transcendence, community, beauty, dignity, and meaning; and explains why he is strongly recommending it to others.
