The present exhibition arose from of the interactions between several professors and the students in the MFA Seminar class taught by Franklin Hill Perrell at the CW Post Campus of Long Island University during the past Spring semester. The purpose of the course was to link current activities of the students, their own art projects, to the larger themes of the art world, especially that of New York. A distinctive visual thread provided a link between otherwise disparate approaches. Work produced in the department (recognized today as one of the best in the country) all shared a strong interest in the investigation of space and surface. Typically shallow, frontal treatments of space prevail, but an intriguing ambiguity about the complexities of inner space seem to simultaneously provide a constant fascination. Physicality and tangibility, a questioning of the nature of what is real, is recurrent. These approaches vary, from a DeChirico-esque exploration of deep perspective in the work of Leigh Ann Klein to an impression of stretched, nerve-like organic forms deployed against an amorphous atmospheric background in the work of Reem Hussein. A freely varied grid underpins the colorful composition of Professor Frank Olt, the sumptuous palette adding another component activating spatial pull. Process, formalist echoes, and a strong interest in science also pervade the group. A dialogue about the world's physical nature versus a spiritual, intangible dimension, is part of the groups mood. The plan going forward is that friendships and common interests among these artists, will prompt further group endeavors along these lines.
The show is organized by Franklin Hill Perrell, former Chief Curator of Nassau County Museum, and present Executive Director of the Roslyn Landmark Society which focuses on historic preservation. In his museum career, Perrell was Curator of over 50 major exhibitions including Image Makers in 1994 which introduced Cindy Sherman, Gilbert & George, John Baldssari, etc. to a Long Island audience.
