INTERSECTION: A COLLABORATIVE ART EXHIBITION
Emerging Visual and Performing Artists Explore the Intersection of Faith and Art
Every summer for the last five years emerging artists from universities and art schools around the nation have gathered here in New York City for a summer study program exploring faith and art sponsored by transFORM Arts, a non-profit organization whose mission is to gather and inspire artists and creative catalysts to wrestle with the issues of art, faith and humanity. This year the participants are painters, dancers, sculptors, printmakers, photographers, musicians, set builders, actors, graphic designers, and
illustrators.
“The Theology & Arts [lecture series] has been my favorite,” said Piper Dean, a senior from the University of Maine at Augusta studying printmaking with a minor in photography. “In school we talk about art. In church we talk about theology. But I’ve never talked about how the two intersect.” A new component to the Arts Track, this weekly lecture series explored art as an enduring medium reflecting culture and commenting on the prevailing worldviews, theologies and ideologies of the day.
To better understand different perspectives on faith and spirituality, participants spent several days asking New Yorkers and tourists about their spiritual experiences. After talking with people from more than 23 different countries, the students created an art piece based on their understanding of someone else’s spiritual experience.
The student artists grappled with the intersection of their stories, others stories and God’s story around seven powerful words: Intimacy, Betrayal, Anticipation, Pursuit, Sacrifice, Invitation and Reunion. From this deep exploration emerged seven collaborative pieces involving installation, live performance, film, sculpture, photography and illustration. The final exhibition, Intersection, will give the artists an opportunity to dialogue with viewers, through both art and words, about these universal human experiences.
The exhibition runs from July 16-18, 2010 from 11am-8pm at 44 W 28th Street, 7th floor.
