Spokane Reviews Calvino's Invisible Cities
This month's book produced one of the most lively discussions so far! Italo Calvino's strange and lyrical and fantastical gathering of poetic moments, in a non-linear, but gridlike fashion brought us all to a kind of engagement with the mind and spirit that we were not used to, and which gave people emotions that ranged from frustration and giving up on the book all the way to pure celebration and effervescence over reading something that felt so non-linear, exalted and yet weighted with existential meaning. Each person had a unique take on the book, and most felt the challenge of the book was worthy and helped them engage life in a different way, and focus on, for example: the play of the book, or the puzzle of the book, or the dance of the book, or the philosophy of the book.
A lovely time again over good food and conversation, though this month we will be moving locations as the restaurant we were at had hired a belly dancer for the evening and though this was its own whirling dervish of music and movement, it also made it difficult to have a conversation. The night was made for humor.
Next month, Jan 4th, at 8pm, we will be at Anthony's Restaurant along the river, in an elegant, and quiet, room. :)
